What AWA FIgures Have Been Released

In 1985 Remco were given the license to produce official AWA figures. These 6-inch AWA wrestling figures are remembered fondly by many fans and remain popular among collectors to this day because of their rarity and detail, with some featuring designs on their tights, and actual removable ring gear. Mint on card these figures have become a hot collectible, but it's also nice to find them loose if in great shape.

One of the biggest faults with these figures was that the bodies were very similar to each other but despite this Remco did an excellent job of reproducing the wrestler's facial features.

These wrestling figures were known as the AWA All Stars and the most popular product that Remco released was the Battle Royal set, which included Ric Flair, with cloth sequined ring robe, Rick Martel, Baron Von Raschke, Larry Zbyszko, Curt Hennig,Greg Gagne, and referee Dick Woerhle and even had a fake check for the winner!

Each figure featured articulation on the waists, legs, arms, and heads and most came with accessories, from outfits to championship belts and were more user friendly than the larger, rubber LJN figures which also debuted in 1985.

These figures were also unique in that they were released in packs of 2 or 3 figures, rather than as single figures. In fact the only figures that were released in single figure packs were those in the final and highly collectible Mat Mania series, released in 1986.

Some of the rarer figures at the time were Stan Hansen, Jerry Blackwell, Nick Bockwinkel, and Scott Hall and Remco's last line of these figures included some variant figures, and the addition of Shiek Adnan-Al Kaissie, Jim Brunzell, Doug Somers, Buddy Rose, and Nord the Barbarian.

The ones to look out for and most sought after by collectors are: The Road Warriors, Ellering, Michaels & Janetty, Hansen, Hall, Somers & Rose, and Nord the Barbarian as these were very limited.

The most common figures are the figures released the earlier series, and the most sought after from the final series. Even the loose figures can be valuable if they come with the original accessories.

The Mat Mania series, released in 1986, can fetch prices from anywhere between $400-$1200 MOC on ebay.

The Company:

Who does not know the likes of Johnny Reb Cannon and Mighty Matilda Atomic Aircraft Carriers toys? These became a big hit during the ends of fifties and sixties. Remco Toy Company indisputably owns them. This global manufacturer and marketer of toys emerged first in the 1940s. The two decades that followed marked its huge breakthrough. During the middle of sixties, the company powerfully acquired many popular culture acts licenses. A good example of those included Munsters, Lost in Space, Batman and others.

Perhaps consumers fell in love with its selling slogan, Every Boy Wants a Remco Toy. In history, it represents one of the early toy companies that found their path to fame and success swiftly.

Azrak-Hamway International Inc however acquired Remco Toy Company in 1964. Ten years later it acquired the Remco Toy brand name too. It then designed many memorable toys under that name like the Marvel Super Heroes among others. The New York based company had the pleasure to the new title for thirty-three years.

That was until 1997 when another top American brand, Jakks Pacific came into the picture. It acquired Remco Toy Company and Child Guidance, Azrak-Hamway's innovative section. The good news is that collectors have great stuff they can find constructed during Azrak's Remco Toy Company ownership. The parachuting figures or licensed products that featured hanging or climbing are good for a start.

Interested parties may want to concentrate on the 1970's Azrak-Hamway toy lines. They include worldwide-recognized products inspired by Spiderman, Batman, Space 1999 and Official Worlds Famous Super Monsters among others. The latter involved a series of eight inches action figures and was released in 1973.
