HELPING YOU TAKE CARE OF YOUR FIGURE(S)!![]() Do You Remember The Original Battlestar GalacticaBattlestar Galactica Quote:
that life here...
began out there.
Far across the universe. With tribes of humans...
who may have been the forefathers of the Egyptians...
or the Toltecs...
or the Mayans...
that they may have been the architects of the Great Pyramids...
or the lost civilizations of Lemuria...
or Atlantis...
Some believe that there may yet be brothers of man...
who even now fight to survive...
somewhere beyond the heavens."
Battlestar Galactica is a story of betrayal, heroism, love and courage. It is the story of survival against all odds. It is the story of one species fight for survival from the merciless onslaught of another. In a distant part of the universe there are a series of planets known as the 12 Colonies which are the home of a civilization of humans. The Colonies had been at war with the Cylon Empire, a cybernetic race, in the past. But the colonies are ambushed by the Cylons, helped by a human named Baltar, in a surprise attack that lays waste to all the planets and all but wipes out their population. Fleeing the colonies in any spacecraft they can find the few human survivors to refuge in space. Of all the Colonial Fleet, the Battlestar Galactica seems to be the the only military ship to have survived the attack. Led by the famed military leader Commander Adama, the Battlestar Galactica and its crew take up the task of leading the small fugitive fleet of survivors into space in search of a fabled refuge known as Earth. The original concept by Glen A. Larson, the Executive Producer of Battlestar Galactica, which he originally called Adam's Ark, was concieved in the late 1960s but unable to get the project greenlit backed or financed his dreams weren't realized until 1978, after the success of Star Wars. The first episode aired on September 17, 1978 but was interupted by an hour long broadcast annoncing the signing of the Israeli-Egyptian peace accord at Camp David. During its short live 17 original episodes of the series were aired (five of them two-part shows), totaling 24 hours of broadcasting. But in April 1979 ABC cancelled the show, despite winning the 6th Annual People's Choice Awards for Best New TV Drama Series, quoting poor viewing figures and high cost as the reasons. Strangely enough I have clearer and fonder memories of this than I do of Star Wars and I used to eagerly await each epidsode. After a couple of years hiatus a poorly budgeted and ill concieved sequel titled Galactica was aired in 1980 but this was a quick failure. But the original series continued to gain a cult following and Glen A. Larson, Richard Hatch, and Bryan Singer (independent of one another) remained faithful to the original series tried to revive it. Several other projects including demonstration videos and mini series were planned or started after but never came to fruition due to lack of funding or committment. As a result it wasn't until 2003 that a new re-imagined Battlestar Galactic was made. With Ronald D. Moore and David Eick, were the creative forces behind it Universal Television made a miniseries which premiering on Sky1 in the UK and Ireland in October 2004, and on Sci-Fi in the U.S. in January 2005. This miniseries was so successful that Sci-Fi opted to develop this new version of Galactica into a television series. Since then the series has gone on to recieve television awards and much critical acclaim from the TV critics and several short webisodes as well as TV Movies, comic and entertainment console games.
Main Characters from the Original Battlestar Galactica Commander William Adama- He is the commander of the Battlestar Galactica, a refugee fleet and military spaceship of the evacuees of the Twelve Colonies. Adama is a fair and beloved leader, with almost unquestioned authority. He is also the spiritual leader of the surviving colonists and thereby is a key character to the series thus in some ways the saga revolves around him. He was the only battlestar commander to keep his ship on battle stations drills and as a result the Galactica was the only battlestar to survive the Cylon sneak attack. His mission is to organize the human survivors to escape from the Cylons and at the same time lead them on the search for Earth. Captain Apollo Adama- He the leader of Blue Squadron, an accomplished group of Viper pilots of the Battlestar Galactica, and is the son of Commander Adama. Apollo's history has been marred by tragedy. The loss of the Twelve Colonies deprived him of not only his home, but many of his personal connections. He is notable for having died and then been revived. In the episode War of the Gods, a mysterious character known as Count Iblis kills him after he tried to save Lt. Sheba's life. Luckily for him he was brought back to life by an alien race called the Beings of Light. Apollo always flies with Starbuck as his wingman and is arguably the central character of the miniseries as most of the storylines and character relationships revolve around him. Lieutenant Starbuck- He is best friend to Apollo and is considered as the best Viper starfighter pilot aboard Battlestar Galactica. He is known to be a maverick, a gambler, womanizer and smoker. Starbuck is very close to the family of Commander Adama, who refers to Starbuck as a man he loves like a son. Lieutenant Athena Adama- She is Commander Adama's only daughter and serves as both a bridge officer on the Battlestar Galactica and as a pilot. She also is seen working as an elementary teacher to some of the Colonial Fleet's children. She was romantically linked to Lieutenant Starbuck, but later drifted apart after Starbuck met the ex-socialator Cassiopeia. Athena was the only major recurring character not to appear for the entire run of the show. Lieutenant Boomer- He is a Battlestar officer with a background in engineering and communications. He is also an expert Colonial Viper pilot, and had pulled a tour of duty in the frozen environment of Ice Station Thule, making him an asset for similar missions in the series. He frequently flies with Apollo and Starbuck as a third wingman. Boomer has reached the rank of colonel and was the executive officer of the Battlestar Galactica in the later adaptation of the series. Colonel Saul Tigh- He is the Executive Officer of the Battlestar Galactica and even flew a Viper in the same squadron as Commander Adama in their early years. Tigh at first appears to be strictly by-the-book and a tough disciplinarian and has proven that he is a competent Battlestar commander multiple times when Comander Adama is not well to take command of the ship. Commander Cain- He is the commander of Battlestar Pegasus, the father of Lieutenant Sheba, and former lover of Cassiopeia. He is regarded as one of the greatest heroes in the Colonial military and his combat strategies are legendary throughout the fleet. However, he is also known to be rather impulsive and a maverick. He inspires near-fanatical loyalty amongst his crew on the Pegasus. Under his command, the Pegasus went into unknown territory during a battle, out of contact with the Twelve Colonies. It was widely believed that the Battlestar still remains out there in the galaxy. Lieutenant Sheba- She is the daughter of the legendary Commander Cain and leader of the Silver Spar Viper squadron from the Battlestar Pegasus. She was left behind on the Galactica when her father took the Pegasus off to battle. Sheba was assigned responsibility for a Viper squadron in the Galactica although she has continued wearing her Pegasus flight insignia. She has been known to continuously reject the advances of the maverick pilot Lieutenant Starbuck. Cassiopeia- She is a refugee who escaped the destruction of the Twelve Colonies at the hands of the Cylons. Her former occupation was as a 'socialator', which is a euphemism for a prostitute. She serves as part of the Battlestar Galactica's medical staff. She develops a romantic relationship with Lieutenant Starbuck early on, and it carries on up to the end of the series. Serina- She was a broadcaster for the Peace Conference that was supposed to end the 1,000 year Cylon War. She was present during the first part of the sneak attack by the Cylons on the Colonies. She somehow managed to escape the attack with her son, Boxey, and was safely rescued aboard the Galactica. Serina first met Captain Apollo on Caprica and they eventually fell in love and got married. Serina later went on to become a shuttle pilot and later trained to fly a Colonial Viper. She died in an ambush while accompanying Commander Adama and Apollo during an exploration of the planet Kobol. Boxey- He is the son of Serina and the adopted son of Captain Apollo. Boxey grew up to become Captain Troy in Galactica 1980. Troy is the actual name for the character commonly referred to by his childhood nickname, "Boxey", a child character from the original series. By the time the Fleet discovered Earth, Troy had joined the Colonial forces as a Colonial Warrior and Viper pilot. Troy along with Lt. Dillon led first team to interact with Earth. Chameleon is a character from the television series Battlestar Galactica. He is well versed in the art of flattery and misdirection which he deftly uses to con unsuspecting Colonists out of the things he needs to survive. It was revealed in later episodes that he is Starbuck's long-lost father. The Seraphs are known to be an alien race which seems to be wingless angels traveling in a large spacecraft most commonly referred to as the Ship of Lights. They appear roughly humanoid although their faces are always veiled. It was also revealed that they can take on a normal human form when called upon to do so. Count Iblis is a mysterious character with seemingly God-like abilities. It was later revealed that he was a castaway from the Serapg race for trying to rebel. His power is limited to those who freely give him power over them. Count Baltar- He is a leading antagonist character who betrayed the human race by selling out to the robot race of Cylons. He used to be a colonial military officer who led an expedition to discover new sources of tylium for mining. After discovering a particularly rich tylium deposit on Carillon, he got greedy and decided to go into business for himself, leaving the military and forging records by declaring Carillon too minimal for mining. He then set himself up as partners with the Cylons and Ovions who were also mining in Carillon. Before he betrayed humanity, Baltar was a liaison between the humans and the Cylons and arranged for a peace conference that would bring an end to the war. It was that instance wherein he turned his back on his own kind and the succeeding Imperious Leader rewarded this traitor as commander to a Cylon basestar. Imperious Leader- It is the leader of the Cylon Alliance and highest Cylon model. It has a body built to resemble the reptilian race which originally built the Cylons. Imperious Leaders are stated to have three brains, each one capable of individual or unified thought, making them adept strategists and leaders. Lucifer- It is the robot assistant to Count Baltar. It is an I-L series Cylon which has a transparent pointy head, often wears red robes, and has two oscillating eyes, in contrast to the single eye of Cylon Centurions. It is assigned as second in command to Count Baltar by the Cylon's Imperious Leader. Cylons are a fictional race of reptilian robots which are the primary antagonists of the Twelve Colonies of humanity. The Cylons were created by a reptilian race, also called Cylons, which died out centuries earlier. These alienoids (for lack of a better word) are categorized here according to rank:
