Who Is Dr Who

Have you ever heard of Dr Who..?

If you happen to spot a police booth in the United Kingdom while on vacation, you might want to take a closer look at it just to make sure that it's the real thing and not just another tourist attraction. If you get lucky enough on your inspection, you may have found the TARDIS owned by someone named Doctor Who and not by the British Police.

Wait...TARDIS?

Owned by whom?

Doctor Who?

Who is Who?

Well, you just might start asking yourself a lot of questions if you haven't seen or are not familiar with the British sci-fi TV program called "Dr. Who".

Owned and produced by Europe’s broadcasting giant, the BBC Network, the TV series Dr Who is about the adventures of an alien being that has the ability to travel through time using the police box look-alike known as the "Time and Relative Dimensions in Space"”, otherwise known as TARDIS.

Dr Who is a huge hit in the U.K. and has been part of popular culture since its inception in 1963 and until its was discontinued in 1989.

It follows the exploits and adventures of the lead character named Doctor Who as he goes about exploring time and space using his time machine (TARDIS). The good Doctor is depicted to be from an ancient God-like race called the Time Lords from a distant planet named Gallifrey. Fed up with his elders' rule of not lifting a finger to interfere with the incidents of time and space in order to help make things better, our adventurous alien hero ran away from home taking along with him his granddaughter Susan.

I honestly have no idea why anyone should mess with the hands of time and change the course of history but Doctor Who was able to pull it off by becoming the first renegade Time Lord. With the power to time-travel and regenerate his health, Doctor Who set out course for a timeless adventure (pun intended), and battled monsters like the Autons, Cybermen, Sontarans, Zygons, Silurians, The Ice Warriors, the Rani, Davros, The Master, and most notably, The Daleks.

The Doctor's ability to regenerate was one way of prolonging the series when the writers were faced with the departure of a lead actor; and it worked quite well. Throughout the years, Doctor Who’s character has already been portrayed by at least ten different actors from five different eras namely: William Hartnell (1963–1966); Patrick Troughton (1966–1969); Jon Pertwee (1970–1974); Tom Baker (1974–1981); Peter Davison (1981–1984); Colin Baker (1984–1986); Sylvester McCoy (1987–1989, 1996); Paul McGann (1996); Christopher Eccleston (2005); and David Tennant (2005–present)

The program's plot and various characters became popular with the British audience and the series went on a straight run of 26 years on the tube, ending sometime in 1989.

But audiences weren't happy and the program continued in popularity despite having been axed from its top spot, but due to fan pressure the BBC network decide to revive it.

Their first attempt to revive Dr Who in 1995 failed, mainly due to having been "Americanised" and almost completely changed from its original premise.

They tried again in 2005 with some developmental assistance from the Canadian Broadcasting network and thankfully it was back on track, and has even produced a successful spin-off TV series titled "Torchwood".

This new series is targeted towards audience from the late teens and upwards which makeing for a more diverse mix.
