How Did Halo 1 Change The Future of FPS Games
Back in 2001, when Bungie Studios launched Halo: Combat Evolved as its launch title for the Microsoft's X-box gaming system, little did we know then that it would become so popular and would change the future of FPS games, with future FPS games or rather games in general would borrowing game elements from the Halo 1 FPS game. Take for example, the recharging shield, the single button ability to launch a grenade and the ability to use two weapons simultaneously etc.
Though the game backdrop is set on Halo - A titular planet with plenty of secrets to be unraveled, the campaign begins elsewhere on the Pillar of Autumn Ship, which has been invaded by a coalition of alien species, the Covenant. The Master Chief and Cortana escape via an escape pod but crash land on a ring. Captain Keyes, who tries to land the ship on Halo, crashes and is captured by the Covenant. With the help of human survivors the Master Chief and Cortana are able to rescue Keyes from the clutches of the Covenant during the second and third levels of the game. Into the early stages we learn that planet Halo is quite similar to our planet. It has greenery, blue sky and rivers flowing and has buildings but unlike ours. On your first encounter with the enemy makes your given the impression that and that that each of the races that make up the Covenant react very differently, some rushing at you while others taking a more cautios route and some running away from you. About halfway through the game, the Flood is unleashed by the Covenant accidentally, and Halo becomes entirely different, going from intelligent gunfights in the earlier levels to the brainless FPS game where you have to kill the parasitic alien race rushing towards you or stand and be killed by them. However, the introduction of the Flood comes as a surprise package in the game play. (hmm...sorry. Maybe I should have kept quiet about that! The Master Chief has an array of weapons tho help him in his struggle against the Flood and the Covenant, among them are assault rifle, shotgun, grenade and more other worldly plasma weapons of Covenant. One of the master strokes of the game design is the ability to launch grenades with single button. Also the use of Covenant plasma grenades against your enemies is pretty kool devilish as they stick to your enemies bodies before exploding. Another Halo 1 surprise was the marine vehicles. When you jump into one the game switches from first person to third person. Besides the human form of transport, there are transports for the Covenants with a very different form, like jeep-like Warthog, scorpion tank, flying ship etc. These vehicles were equipped with various weapons. While Spartan soldiers, recalled from Reach to help Master Chief to contain the Covenant, could commandeer the Covenant Vehicle, but during the entire game play you will hardly notice any Covenant AI commandeering the human vehicles. To add spice to the game, Halo 1 was complemented with one of the best soundtracks that you can consider, has been ever composed for a game. The music was unique and still delightful to listen. Apart from the controversy generated by introduction of the Flood in game play, where the fans felt that unleashing of Flood led to senseless FPS from otherwise intelligent gunfight and some repetitive environments, which was a letdown, Halo1 may be considered as a successful campaign in more than one ways. It was a strong multiplayer game and PC game as well. It has remained one of the most treasured and engrossing FPS games to this day and it will be remembered for influencing the game industry in more than one ways, from recharging shield to launch of grenade with single button to tactical use of two weapons.
