Movie Icon James Dean Figure: Hollywood Icon and Heartthrob
The James Dean Figure from Hot Toys celebrates the life and works of one of Hollywood's most charasmatic stars, who despite his short career (3 films) is still remembered more than 50 years after his untimely death. If there ever was ever anyone born to the phrase of "living life in the fast lane", then the enigmatic James Dean is that person. James Dean was born on February 8, 1931 in Indiana but then moved to Santa Monica, California together with his parents at the age of six. He lost his mother to cancer at just three years old and as his father was unable look out for him, he was raised up by his father's relatives back in Indiana. The young James Dean grew up with an affinity for theater and car racing and was intent on pursuing his dream. As fate would have it, James found himself back in California after high school and eventually found himself involved in what he had longed to do- theater acting. After moving to New York to search for more lucrative and brighter acting opportunities, he was eventually given his first big break when he was chosen to play the lead role in the movie East of Eden. Dean's life suddenly became a roller coaster ride and he went on to make two more films. His good looks might have helped earn him a place in Hollywood stardom but in reality it was his acting that made him famous. Dean was one of the rare newcomers who had the ability to give credence to the character he portrayed in his movies. Incidentally, the roles he played, a rebellious teenager (Rebel without a Cause); an insecure loner (East of Eden); and a gruff farmer (Giant) were a prism of his real personality which allowed him to play the parts seamlessly. For his talent and mysterious aura, James Dean has become a Hollywood icon in just a few short years. He is undeniably a legend in his own right and the irony of it all is that his two last films were released after his untimely death in 1955 due to a high speed car crash. Try as anyone might, there is no simple explanation as to why the man was able to achieve such a lofty status and become such a huge icon and is still a household name today, even more than 50 years after his death.
