HELPING YOU TAKE CARE OF YOUR FIGURE(S)!
Was John Riggins, Mistreated and Unappreciated?
John Riggins was a product of the 1970s which was a decade in which professional football (the NFL) became the most popular sport in the United States. Though it had been around for quite a while, the 70s players were bigger, stronger, and faster than any players previous. Even the running backs on teams were powerhouse players who could hold their own against the games toughest defensive dominators. This was a decade that gave us Franco Harris, Walter Payton, and Earl Campbell. One of the players from this era that often goes unmentioned is former Washington Redskin great, John Riggins.
Born August 4th, 1949 in Seneca, Kansas, John Riggins was a pure workhorse running back that personified the hard-nosed style needed to excel against the brutal linebackers of the time. Known by most of his fans as “Riggo” or “The Diesel”, Riggins played his college ball with the Kansas Jayhawks, and was drafted by the New York Jets in 1971 with the 6th overall pick in the first round. He played a total of 5 years with the Jets organization, in which he became the Jet’s MVP in 72, and was selected to his only Pro Bowl in 1975, due to his 1,004 yards gained rushing. He ended up being signed as a free agent by the Washington Redskins to start the 1976 season, remaining there until his retirement. Riggins holds multiple rushing records with the Redskins, including 11,352 rushing yards, 2,916 attempts, 104 rushing TDs, and 116 total TDs. A contract dispute in 1980 forced the hand of Redskins management, and they placed Riggins on the retired list, making him ineligible to play for any other NFL team. It was new head coach Joe Gibbs who traveled to Kansas to make the peace offering which brought Riggins back. Among Riggins’ many accomplishments are 2 All-Pro selections in 1975 and 1983, a solidified spot on the NFL’s 1980s All-Decade Team, named one of the 70 Greatest Redskins, Super Bowl XVII MVP, holds a Redskins’ Ring of Fame, and was named the 1978 NFL Comeback Player of the Year. Riggins and the Redskins also made an appearance in Super Bowl XVIII, only to lose to the Los Angeles Raiders. Many believe that Riggins would be one of the premier running backs of all time, if only he didn’t have the misfortune of playing when Walter Payton played. His short-yardage game was immaculate, setting (and still holding) an NFL record 81 touchdowns of 3 yards and less. A workhorse who gains short-yardage is a great commodity to have in the NFL. Players a lot less talented than Riggins made names for themselves by converting 3rd and 1s, 2nd and goal, and other short-yardage situations. In an era which witnessed Walter Payton become the NFL’s all-time greatest rusher, Riggins has a spot carved out, all his own. Since retiring, Riggins was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1992, and has been the host of numerous talk-radio shows, including his current show, The John Riggins Show. Riggins has also been arrested and in trouble for alcohol-related problems. Though he’s never been at the forefront of media controversy, most do believe that Riggins’ behavior is a result of his mistreatment during his playing years.
