Halo Figures from Joyride Studios

Joyride Studios first started producing Halo figures in 2003. The company had been in business for over fifty-five years and had produced a wide range of collectors' items, from James Bond cars to Mech Warrior and Battlestar Galactica action figures.

In 2003 Joyride Studios were licensed to produce action figures, with Bungie Studios, for Halo: Combat Evolved the first of a new trilogy of games from Microsoft, which was to become hugely successful.

The first three figures that were produced were the Master Chief, Cortana, and a Warthog, which were an instant success with fans and collectors of the game.

As a result of this success Joyride Studios, and Bungie, released a total of five series along with several "exclusive" figures which were produced and released in select stores at select times.

However these figures weren't always easy to get hold of and due to the lack of availability their prices often went up on the secondary market, sometimes into thousands of dollars. This has meant that there is still a very active secondary market for these figures to this day.

Their success with the Halo:Combat Evolved figures led to them also producing figures for the Halo 2 game.

A total of eight series of figures were produced and a number of exclusive figures by Joyride for Halo 2. Many of the exclusive Halo figures were released in line with press releases on the game, e.g. a Master Chief figure featuring two guns was released shortly after the Dual Wielding feature was announced, and the Brute action figure became available only after the Brute's role in the game was revealed.

One of the most unique features of the their Halo figures was the serial number they included on every action figure.

This serial number allowed you to find out when the action figure was created. The date code had four numbers followed by 'SS' actually stamped or embossed in the cardboard.

The first three digits were the date the product was made, and the fourth digit the year, e.g. 2653SS meant that the product was manufactured on the 265th day of 2003 (9/23/2003).

Despite its successes and popularity among fans and collectors they were eventually replaced by McFarlane Toys, possibly because it seemed that they were struggling to keep up with demand and the figures were often difficult to find.

McFarlane Toys took over the production of the Halo figures for Halo 3 in June 2007 and since then Joyride Studios have gone out of business.
