The Simpsons Lard Lad Treehouse of Horror VI
If you’re a seasoned fan of the Simpsons and Playmates Treehouse of Horror playsets then you’re sure to love this Lard Lad set. Since McFarlane Toys took over the license from Plamates this is their fourth, and probably best, deluxe boxed set to date. This boxed set is a scene from the popular Treehouse of Horrors VI episode and The Attack of the 50 Foot Eyesores. Homer is shown here attempting to steal Lard Lads giant donut just before the outbreak of a freak storm that brings Lard Lad and the other giant advertising billboards to life.
As usual the sculpting on these figures is up to McFarlarne's usual high standards, even the 2 inch Homer. His ears are a bit small for the scale and the nose is a little out of shape but considering the size the overall effect is excellent. The other minor fault with the Homer figure is that he is looking down rather than up as would be expected in this scene. Homer also comes with an alternative masked head which works well with this figure. Lard Lad figure stands a whopping 8 1/2 inches at his highest point. The less complex animated style of these figures lends itself well to a cleaner, crispier and more detailed look. Lard Lad only is only articulated on the right shoulder and eyebrow with the left side only moving with the sets action feature. The overall effect is better than I had expected and is probably the best of the deluxe boxed sets to date. The action feature consists of a lever on the left side of the set which when pushed Lard Lads arm tilts down as if Homer is trying to steal the donut and at the same time his eyebrows turn into a scowl. Although the feature is a pleasant addition to the set it is unnecessary and doesn't do the set justice but was probably added to keep the "younger" fans happy. The use of a real metal chain also works well with this set allowing for more accuracy in the scale and detail of the piece particularly in proportion to Lard Lad and the car. The chain is in two parts with one end attached to the donut and the other end to Homer's car. The two ends hook together easily creating a surprisingly realistic effect. The paintwork is also up to the usual high standards we've come to expect from McFarlane. The colours are consistent and the lines are clean with none of the rub marks evident on some of the previous Spawn figures. Overall another nice addition to McFarlane's line off Simpsons action figures and with the Simpsons 2 Series due soon there's plenty to keep fans happy this Christmas. Due Oct, 2007
