Gears of War: Marcus Fenix Statue

Marcus Fenix is a fictional character from the wildly successful X-Box 360? video game Gears of War developed by Epic Games in tandem with publisher Microsoft Game Studios.

According to the storyline of the game, Marcus Fenix is the central character who fights a war against the massive Locust Horde- a subterranean alien species which not only out powers and outnumbers our hero and his ragtag squad of battle-tested soldiers, but the entire force of the Coalition of Ordered Governments (C.O.G.) as well.

But prior to the Locust Invasion, Marcus Fenix was portrayed as a promising soldier having a famed military career due to his outstanding role in the Pendulum Wars. Soon after the discovery of Imulsion- a low-viscosity, phosphorescent substance exploited for its various energy applications, countries with little Imulsion available for their consumption waged war with other countries that possess it. The Pendulum Wars all started due to the scarcity and high value of this energy source. This war is much like the Gulf War in Iraq where oil was the primary cause of undue atrocity.

Just when humanity was on the brink of wiping each other out, the war immediately ended on "Emergence Day"- the day when the Locusts suddenly crawled out from under the ground and began attacking the war weary human race. So much for good timing! The C.O.G. leaders were the ones brave enough to take the steps needed to help humanity survive this new terror. Suddenly becoming a universal government, the C.O.G. enforced martial law and took charge in the effort of going to war against the Locust species. Fourteen years later and the C.O.G. is the only form of government left on Sera, the world where Gears of War takes place.

After having seen everything change on Emergence Day, Marcus Fenix bravely fought the Locusts for ten long years. But during one fateful battle, he was forced to abandon his post to rescue his father, Professor Adam Fenix whose place was attacked by the Locusts and got killed in the raid. Marcus Fenix was evidently charged for dereliction of duty for leaving his post and was sentenced to 40 years in a maximum security prison.

But after just four years, the prison was attacked and ravaged by these rampaging Locusts and Fenix behind bars was left for dead in the dilapidated penitentiary. Dominic "Dom" Santiago, Marcus’ loyal friend and comrade, rescued him (as seen in the first act of Gears of War) from the ruins of the prison. Dwindling in supply of combatants, the military reinstated Marcus Fenix into active status and assigned him to serve with the Delta Squad to fight the Locust army.

He was later promoted to the rank of Sergeant for his heroic achievements and eventually became the leader of Delta Squad when their commanding officer, Lt. minh Young Kim was killed by General RAAM of the Locust Horde.

Following this turn of events, Fenix led his comrades across the wasteland of Sera to plant and detonate the C.O.G.’s latest weapon inside the Locust Horde’s main tunnel camp. When the Delta Squad got separated in the process, Marcus teamed up with Dom to finish the mission. They successfully detonated the Coalition’s weapon called the Lightmass bomb which effectively killed and destroyed much of the Locust Hollow. In doing so, Marcus Fenix won a much needed victory for the human race and was able to restore his reputation as a soldier at the same time.

But deep inside him, Marcus knew that the war was still far from over…
