Mcfarlane Baseball Figures Series 22 features:
Few players in history have meant more to their respective teams than Derek Jeter has meant to the New York Yankees. His famous “dive” catch sent him 3 rows back into the stands to catch a ball during the ’04 ALCS, cutting his chin, bruising his face, removing him from the game, and solidifying his spot as the diehard go-getter type of player that New Yorkers absolutely love. His contract for 2008, worth a reported $21-million, further emphasizes the love that New York has for their All Star shortstop. Jeter is consistently fantastic at everything he does. He hits for average, makes impossible plays look routine, and doesn’t cause trouble on or off the field. Though the Yankees are in third place in the AL East this season, Jeter’s play in ’08 has been as solid as ever. The 2008 season has been difficult for the Yankees as a whole, but for Jeter in particular. After releasing long-time manager Joe Torre, the Yankees’ players all felt a bit disheartened as the search was on for someone to fill Joe’s shoes. Jeter, who admittedly likens Torre to his own father, seemed more distraught than the rest of the roster combined, stating that things would be tough without Torre there for guidance. But true to his character, Jeter persevered and is having one of his best seasons ever on the defensive side of the ball. Earning his 9th All Star selection this season, Jeter proves that age is nothing but a number. The 34-year-old plays like he’s fresh out of the minors, and gives 100% every single play. Jeter’s power seems to be on the decline, but his eye seems to be improving. This is an odd happening in baseball, but Jeter seems to get wood on the ball every time he’s at bat. In 107 games this year, Jeter has reached base in more than a third. His 36 walks in 430 at bats prove that he’s a competitor who isn’t resigned to take pitches. If Jeter can keep up his enthusiasm and great play, the Yankees may just surge and earn a playoff birth. 2008 Season Stats

The Houston Astros decided not to let the baseball world pass them by in the 2006 offseason. In a move that set the Astros back $100-million, they acquired the All Star left fielder, Carlos Lee. His 2007 efforts were much appreciated by the Houston faithful, and the 2008 season started off as a reminder to the Astros organization that they had made the right move. The season hasn’t smiled on the Astros yet, but Carlos Lee has given everything he possibly can to make the struggling ball club legitimate contenders. The 32-year-old Panama-born slugger isn’t a shoo-in for the Hall of Fame, but his passion for play is pure legendary. Lee’s year is going well by anyone’s standards. The hard-hitting batsman seems to knock the stitching loose every time he makes contact. With around 40 games left in the season, Lee is a very safe bet for 100 RBI and 30 homers. The Astros are in desperate need of a bright spot in their lineup. 14 games back in the National League Central race, it’s highly unlikely that the Astros will visit the post season this year. But with a guy like Lee at the plate, there’s always a chance. Notably this season, Lee failed to earn an All Star bid. This fact did not sit well with the legions of Carlos Lee fans who call themselves “Los Caballitos” which translates to “little horses” in Spanish, referencing Lee’s nickname “El Caballo” meaning “The Horse.” The little horses have been impressed with Lee’s stellar play thus far, and support him constantly. The world of sports media also recognizes Lee’s ability, showing his highlights frequently on the major sporting news channels. 2008 Season Stats

The world stood still in 2004 as Curt Schilling took the mound for the Boston Red Sox in the ALCS. Though the playoffs are nothing new for Schilling, and definitely not for the Red Sox, this time was different. After receiving sutures in an injured ankle, Schilling’s sock turned red with blood as he gave the best 7 innings of his life in a game 6 victory over the New York Yankees. The Red Sox won the World Series that year, but Schilling seemed to lose in the end. Since then, he’s been one of the most injury-prone players in the league. As of 2007, Schilling was having problems in his ankle, his shoulder, and a few other minor issues. Though technically still on the roster, Schilling will miss the entire 2008 season. Schilling is regarded as one of the best postseason pitchers in MLB history. With an outstanding record of 11-2 in postseason play, his presence would be more than welcomed should the Red Sox make the playoffs this year. As it stands, the Sox are 3 games out of first in the AL East, and Schilling is 3 months away from starting a pitching regiment. Schilling is sorely missed by a lacking Red Sox pitching rotation this season, but the 2007 numbers the vet put together have Sox nation hopeful of a triumphant return. He’s never been a shutout, dominant pitcher, but he’s always been consistently good. In 2007, Schilling was one out away from his first career no-hitter, and in the playoffs, he earned 3 more victories as the Red Sox won their second World Series title in 3 years. The 41-year-old right hander seems to have the passion to play. Even if he doesn’t have as much fuel in the tank, a slow Curt Schilling is better than no Curt Schilling if you’re a Boston team that struggles with consistent pitching. Schilling’s shoulder injury, coupled with a biceps tenodesis surgery, will keep the former All Star and perhaps future Hall of Famer out until at least October. 2007 Season Stats

In the slow-paced game of baseball, fans love nothing more than an energetic, larger than life, sparkplug of a player. The New York Mets have their quintessential class clown in All Star shortstop, Jose Reyes. Professor Reyes, as he likes to be called, holds classes in between innings at Shea Stadium and teaches the fans words and phrases in Spanish. For a guy who brings the fun and games off of the field, he still makes sure to bring the focus and drive while on it. In 2007, this wasn’t the case for Reyes, who was frequently accused of lackluster play and refusing to run-out plays. But with a new year comes a new philosophy, and who better to implement the improved attitude than a professor. At the start of 2008, Reyes made a commitment to himself and his fans that he would be a more determined baseball player. With only 2 months left in the 2008 season, the New York Mets sit 3 games out of first place in the National League East. This isn’t great news for the Mets, who are now historically known for their gargantuan collapses. But with the help of Reyes, the Mets hope to avoid the pitfalls which have previously plagued the club, and they’re stacked with the talent needed to turn ’08 into a winning season. Reyes is all for the winning and all for playing with the Mets. He’s signed through to 2012, and his money increases exponentially each year he stays with the team, which speaks to how much they want him around. In late July, Reyes hit a triple in the 4th inning against the Cincinnati Reds, earning him his record-breaking 63rd triple of his Met career, beating out Mookie Wilson’s previous record of 62. 2008 also saw the cover of Major League Baseball 2K8 graced with Reyes’ photo. Unlike Madden, 2K’s don’t seem to have a curse, so a healthy Reyes remains confident he’ll stay that way. Reyes is one of the few switch hitters in MLB to hit over .300 this year, and one of the few shortstops to do so in a long time. 2008 Season Stats

Japanese players aren’t rolling into the MLB in hordes, but the select few who make the roster spots are truly modern baseball marvels. There isn’t a player in baseball today, Japanese or otherwise, who can hit the ball like the Seattle Mariners outfielder, Ichiro Suzuki. With over 1,500 hits in his MLB career, Ichiro holds the Major League record for most hits in a season with 262. Since 2001, Ichiro has been a consistently fantastic player who has an amazing ability of turning infield duds into base hits with his lightning-fast speed. Also the owner of a rocker launcher where his arm should be, Suzuki has been one of the top outfielders in the game for 8 seasons. In 2008, there’s nothing out of the ordinary in Seattle. Ichiro is playing the kind of baseball fans have come to expect from the All Star. The 2008 season saw Suzuki get off to a slower start than usual. But as the season progressed, he seemed to come out of his slump and got back in the groove of things by tapping hit after hit. The Mariners are 27 games out of first in the AL West, and statistically have little to no chance of making the playoffs. Sadly, it’s been this way for many years, with only a few sporadic runs. But that hasn’t deterred Ichiro. He is on pace to break the 200-hit mark again this season, which will make him the first player in MLB history to have 200 hits in each of his first 8 seasons. To show they’re loyalty to Ichiro, the small-market Seattle club is digging deep into their pockets to pay Suzuki over $17-million for this year. When Ichiro broke the single season hit record in ’04, he was only making $6.5-million. Ichiro also broke the Seattle Mariners record for stolen bases in May of this season with 292 successful steals. To date, Ichiro has 500 stolen bases if you include his professional career in Japan. Also, Ichiro became the youngest player in history to break the mark of 3,000 hits, again, including Japanese play, previously held by Ty Cobb. Ichiro was also selected to his 8th consecutive All Star team this season. 2008 Season Stats

A wise man once said that baseball is a metaphor for life. And as Andruw Jones shows us on a consistent basis, sometimes life is hard. You can teach someone the fundamentals of the game. A player can learn to hit, learn to field, and even learn to be a good and fair competitor. But you just can’t teach the passion for the sport. As a former All Star outfielder for the Atlanta Braves, Andruw Jones was on the fast track to superstardom. But since his arrival in L.A. 2 years ago to play with the Dodgers, he’s been on a steady decline that has resulted in some of the worst baseball effort a “big name” player has ever put forth. The 2008 season began where the 2007 season left off for Jones. His incessant lackluster performance earned him boos and jeers from multiple venues around the country. The fans aren’t exactly open to a guy who doesn’t even want to play. And watching Jones play, it was evident that his passion for the game was null and void. At the end of July, Jones had only 4 hits in 53 attempts with runners in scoring position. The once heavy handed, fleet footed centerfielder was placed at the back of the lineup in hopes of awakening the sleeping giant. But even that wasn’t enough to put some pep back in Jones’ step. Jones had never been on the disabled list before the ’08 season, but found a comfortable spot to sit after having minor knee surgery earlier this year. The former superstar is set to make almost $15-million for this season of play, but hasn’t tried to earn a penny of it. With a batting average of .166, manager Joe Torre was forced to bench Jones. In a league that demands 100%, Jones’ fortitude is consistently absent. Many rumors are circulating, inferring that the 2008 season may be Andruw’s last as a Dodger. 2008 Season Stats
