The Metroid Prime series, produced by Nintendo was first conceptualized by Gunpei Yokoi in the mid 1980s.

Since its first appearance, there have been a total of ten games, most recently culminating in the trilogy. Met by millions of eager fans who hadn’t seen an installment since Super Metroid in 1994; the 2002 Prime took place between previously released Metroid and Metroid II: Return of Samus.

The first-person shooter Metroid Prime is a departure from the 2D side-scrolling adventure that had made the series so successful yet was still met by wide acclaim.

Samus, the series’ female protagonist, begins the first installment by receiving a distress signal from the Space Pirate Frigate Orpheon.

Here Samus does battle with the Parasite Queen and after she defeats it, must flee the ship as it goes up in flames.

Her escape leads her to the planet Tallon IV where the Chozo civilization was destroyed by the Phazon meteor.

At the Chozo temple, Samus finds the actual meteor, which the Space Pirates are trying to unseal in order to obtain and harness the corrupting power Phazon.

Samus’ mission then becomes to find twelve Chozo artifacts so that she may unlock the Phazon power before the Space Pirates.

After a battle with Meta-Ridley, Samus enters the crater left by the meteor. Here she finds the Phazon powered Metroid Prime, and after she defeats it, has her Phazon suit stolen by the creature.

Barely escaping, it uses Samus’ Phazon suit to become Dark Samus, the enemy in the following two installments of the series.

It has gained a huge following and is one of the best selling Gamecube titles, with 250,000 units sold in just one week.

The game’s success prompted a sequel just two years later called Metroid Prime 2: Echos. In this game, Samus reaches a planet called Aether and is met with the complications of another Phazon meteor that has somehow caused an alternate reality.

The final installment came in August of 2007 via the new Nintendo Wii.

In Metroid Prime 3: Corruption, Dark Samus uses Phazon to corrupt Samus and various other planets and people in the game.

Many new features were added to this game, including free-aiming with the Wii remote and the necessity of discharging Phazon via powerful Phazon blasts in order to avoid becoming “Corrupted”.

In the final scene of the game, Samus must do battle with Dark Samus.
