Despite death threats and much contreversy and a nail biting finish to the summer Mantle finally took the accolade.  When he debuted in 1951, the fans and media alike were convinced that this Oklahoma-born phenomenon was the second coming of Ruth. And they weren’t wrong. From 1951 to 1968, Mantle amazed fans with his grit and hero-esque valor. In this rookie season, he launched 13 homeruns in only 96 games. Meager numbers by todays, homerun-ready standards. But in 1951, with the outfield wall still pushed back to over 460 feet, hitting the ball out of the park was quite the feat unless you struck gold with the short-porch corners in right and left, respectively. Mickey, however, had centerfield power, showing the fans something they had not seen since Ruth. Figure Stats

 He played in the Minor Leagues from 1953 to 1956. He ended his first Major League year with 84 hits, 51 RBI’s and batting average of .235. 1961 is probably one of the most famous years in Baseball history as Maris and Mickey Mantle slogged it out, bat for bat to beat Babe Ruth's all time recird of 61 homers. The event is famous as “Roger’s 61 in 1961”. Over the years Roger rememberes 1961 as the most stressful season of his entire career. He continued to be a strong defensive player on the field. In 1966 rumors started of Roger becoming a free agent but eventually he was traded to the St. Louis Cardinals. In his first season with the Cardinals he had 107 hits, 55 RBI’s and batting average of .261. Diagnosed with cancer (lymphoma) in 1983 and after two years fighting with the diseases he passed away on 14 Dec 1985, at the age of 51. Roger was one of the best defensive players of his time and was the proud father of Susan, Roger JR., Kevin, Randy, Sandra and Richard Maris. The Roger Maris cancer Center is a fund raising beneficiary to support cancer patients, and for research and development. Roger Maris will always remain a baseball hero for his fans and homeland Fargo honors him with “The Roger Maris Museum” in West Acres shopping Center, Fargo.
