HELPING YOU TAKE CARE OF YOUR FIGURE(S)!
The Predator, Friend or Foe
Is the Predator truly a friend? or Foe? Many believe that the Predator initially came to Earth as our protectors against the onslaught of the Aliens, but is this true? Or is there a more sinister and dark truth behind their motives? Traveling through the galaxies in search of other dangerous life forms to hunt for sport, the extra-terrestrial Predator species found the planet Earth and subsequently settled in for the chase. Breathing through an apparatus in the form a space age technology hunting helmet, the Predator sees our world in a different spectrum. The Predator can easily track down and hunt their targets for it is equipped with weapons so advanced and sophisticated even the best that the human race can offer pales in comparison against it. Introduced to the world in 1987 by the tandem of the Thomas brothers, Jim and John, the Predator made its film debut against the bulky Arnold Schwarzenegger as the main feature (rather, antagonist) in the movie with the same title. The Predators are extra terrestrial beings which look like a humanoid creature with its helmet on but when fully revealed, has a face only its mother can love. It is actually a hunter-type class of being and has an enthusiasm for visiting other planets and chasing down its most dangerous residents just for the heck of it. Call it an adrenalin rush if you will but these aliens’ way of life seems like forever preparing themselves for battle.
They also have a small nuclear bomb type self-destruct device used to commit “hara-kiri” or suicide when the situation looks dire for them, and it blows up everything within the immediate vicinity. The suicide bombing could be one method the terrorist group Al-Qaeda might have learned from them, although that’s still not yet verified as of late. But one thing is clear however, the Predator is like a Samurai warrior who views suicide as an honorable way of dying when they fail in a hunt. I see it as leveling out the playing field by taking yourself out and the competition with you in one blast. But what makes the Predator so special to become the topic of this article anyway? Well, have you always wondered if there are other living beings “out there”? This movie simply gives a sordid example to answer that question. But for one different twist, these extraterrestrial species have a culture much like humans do. Although tribal and primarily known as hunters, they were also described as gods who made contact with and were worshipped by early human civilizations (as it was explained in the Alien Versus Predator movie). They are an intelligent and highly advanced species which educated the early human civilization somehow but in exchange demanded human sacrifices to be offered, who were to conveniently be used as hosts for a parasitic breed of extra-terrestrials which they love to hunt for game trophies- the Alien. So, what makes the Alien species special to the Predators? Although the Aliens are not such a highly intellectual prey, the unpredictability of the outcome of the hunt makes it more dangerous and challenging for the Predator. For one thing the Predator sees the Alien as a creditable kill, an adversary even, unlike hunting for humans wherein the motto is more like “outwit and outplay”- just like the Survivor series, Aliens are known to also stalk prey and fight to survive unlike humans who simply are just the weaker sort. The Predator species makes use of the Aliens as the barometer to test and train their young soldiers to become successful warriors worthy of acceptance into the Predatory ranks. But in order to be accepted the young recruit must first make a kill and mark his forehead using the blood of its quarry. If there is no blood to be had, any part of the body that will make for a resemblance of a trophy will do.
Simply weird. There have been quite a few instances in The Predator movies where their kind has shown some sign of respect for the human race. They usually avoid women and children, unarmed beings and pregnant women (as is the case in AVP) and are fair losers as seen in Predator 2 and AVP. So the next time they visit Earth for a hunt, make sure you’re on their side.
