"Reggie Bush Involved In Controversy"
Reggie Bush
In April, 2006 a report from Yahoo! Sports raised questions that during his final year at college his family received improper benefits oir gifts that are prohibited by NCAA policies.
If ruled to be true his old school would have to forfeit all the games he played in during his senior year and could also face a ban or be put on probation depending on how much it knew or should have know about the benefits he allegedly received.
Yahoo! Sports again made claims that Bush received improper benefits is a report in September 2006 and again in January 2007.
Yahoo's reports claim that both he and his family received improper gifts and payments as well as cash payments while playing football at USC.
The reports are based on an eight month investigation by Yahoo! Sports who say they have documents and interviews from sources close to the situation.
If the rumors are found to be true it could lead to the NCAA to retroactively strip him of his any titles won during this period.
Bush so far has declined to make any comments other than to deny the allegations.
Born on March 2, 1985 Reggie Bush grew up in Spring Valley, California where he attended Helix High School and graduated with a 3.8 GPA and many scholarships.
Whilst at high he also excelled at football and track. In track he won many awards and honors including a 10.25 100m in the California State Championships.
After High School Reggie Bush studied business at the University of Southern California (USC). Head coach, Pete Carroll, saw the potential to use Reggie as a five way threat as he quickly proved he was capable of carrying, throwing and catching the ball with skill.
In 2004, despite not starting any games, he was named the teams MVP and was a finalist for the Walter Camp Player of the Year Award.
This was followed by another excellent season in 2005 as he was a unanimous All-American first team pick, winner of the Heisman Trophy and named as the Associated Press Player of the Year as well as a host of other awards.
Reggie Bush decided at the beginning of 2006 to forego his senior year at college to enter the 2006 NFL Draft.
With the Huston Texans announcing they were signing Mario Williams this meant that he would be in the second draft pick and was selected by the New Orleans Saints.
Many sports writers have since argued that the Texans made one of the biggest gaffes in NFL draft history by not picking him in the first draft.
Days prior to the drafts Reggie Bush signed an endorsement with ADIDAS to promote football and training clothes for the company.
On signing with the New Orleans Saints it was reported that within a week 15000 orders had been received for his shirt, despite the fact that his shirt number hadn't been decided.
Traditionally running backs are required to wear a number between 20 and 49 but Reggie Bush wanted to wear the number 5 as he had kept this number all through his high school and college years.
However, despite his offering to give 25% of his shirt receipts to victims of hurricane Katrina, but the NFL rejected his petition.
As a result he made a deal with Saints running back Fred McAfee to wear the number 25 shirt. As part of this deal he agreed to donate 50% of his shirt receipts to charity with half of this going to New Orleans Hurricane Katrina victims and half to Fred McAfee state Hurricane Katrina victims.
He also donated $50,000 to keep the Holy Rosary church open, which is a Roman Catholic school for students with learning difficulties and disabilities.
His first season with the Saints was fairly mediocre and he had a few ups and downs but as the season wore on he became more settled and his game improved.
In the NFC Divisional Playoffs he helped the Saints make it's first NFC Championship game in the teams 40 year history.
Since signing for the Saints Reggie Bush has become the second highest paid player in endorsements having signed contracts with ADIDAS, Pepsi, General Motors, and Subway Restaurants totalling approximately $5 million.
On July 28, 2006 he signed a six year contract which guarantees $26.35 million and $51 million total with incentives bringing it up to a possible $62 million.
