The Silver Surfer is one of the most tormented of all the Marvel Heroes.

An entity who treasures freedom above all else he has ironically often had to sacrifice his freedom for the greater good of others.

Born on the planet Zenn-La as Norrin Radd, part of an ancient and technologically advanced race that had created a utopian world free of disease, hunger, poverty and crime.

But the aimless hedonism which dominated Zenn-La became to stifling for Norrin's mother and she killed herself.

His father thus raised him to seek knowledge, achievment and advancement.

Norrin Radd there grew into a restless soul longing for challenge and struggle.

But when an alien spaceship, the Galactus, pieced Zenn-La's ancient and neglected defenses Norrin Radd persuades the Council of Scientists to give him a spaceship in order to confront the invader.

Norrin Radd makes a deal with the invader Galactus that if he spares Zenn-La that he will become his "slave" and seek out new worlds for him to consume.

Galactus agrees and transforms Norrin Radd into the silver skinned cosmic powered super-being known as the Silver Surfer.

For many years he serves Galactus well, leading him to uninhabitated, mineral rich worlds to consume.

But finding mineral rich worlds for Galactus to devoir devoid of sentinent life becomes increasingly difficult.

Over time Galactus has subtly altered the Silver Surfer's mind and so he becomes more willing to guide Galactus to worlds that are inhabited until eventually they come to Earth.

Here the he battles against the Fantastic Four where the blind sculptress Alicia Masters, sensing his inner nobility, pleads with him to spare humanity.

His emotions and long buried feelings are stirred by her pleadings and the he turns on Galactus forcing him to withdraw.

However Galactus punishes him by surrounding Earth with an energy barrier uniquely tuned to him and preventing him from ever leaving the planet.

And so the Silver Surfer tries to settle on his new home world.
