HELPING YOU TAKE CARE OF YOUR FIGURE(S)! Star Trek: To Boldly Go Where No Man Has Been Before
Star Trek was an American made sci-fi franchise that originated from the bizarre mind of Gene Roddenberry way back in 1966 and has churned out a massive cult following never before seen or achieved by any other television series. For those of you who haven't seen, or are unaware, of Star Trek: The Original Series this short history will explain a little about the plot and characters for you. With a story timeline set in April 2063, it was illustrated that humankind have developed a form of propulsion referred to as "warp drive" which allows for space travel beyond light speed. Man's initial launch trial created a warp drive signature which was detected by an advanced alien race called Vulcans. This race then made first contact with Earth, mankind got acquainted with the different alien races of the galaxy (Klingons, Bajoran, Romulans, Borgs, Axanars etc.) and soon thereafter, the United Federation of Planets was created. Out of this association of races, a quasi-utopian type of society was born wherein the role of money is moot and is replaced by the need for exploration and the thirst for knowledge. The series follows the adventures of a diverse crew of human beings and extraterrestrials aboard the starship Enterprise wherein their primary mission was to boldly go where no man has gone before, thus making it a space adventure story with no bounds. The cast for the original series featured William Shatner as Captain James Tiberius Kirk, Leonard Nimoy as Spock, James Doohan as Montgomery Scott, DeForest Kelley as Dr. Leonard "Bones" McCoy, George Takei as Hikaru Sulu, Walter Koenig as Pavel Chekov, and Nichelle Nichols as Uhura. The central characters are, for all intents and purposes, portrayed as selfless individuals whose principles are applied to the conundrums presented in the series. Moreover, Star Trek subtly delivers to the audience messages or statements with regards to the issues of sex, religion, politics, economics, war and peace, racism, moral values, human rights and the role of technology. Therefore the conflicts and different choices described in the series narrate into our own existing cultural reality. Due to inexplicably low ratings despite getting a nomination for Best Dramatic Series, it was canceled right after its third season.
However, it became highly popular during its re-runs and developed a cult following with (this is where the geek issue comes in) engineering students and science-fiction fans for its futuristic technological ideas and recurring reality issues. The sudden popularity of the Star Trek franchise prompted the creation of computer and video game adaptations, hundreds of novels, fan-created video productions and even a themed attraction and fan conventions! The original show also served as the groundwork for four TV series, an animated TV series and 10 live action films with an 11th rendition soon to be released on May 2009. The upcoming edition tentatively titled Star Trek: Star Fleet Academy goes back to Captain Kirk and Mr. Spock's early beginnings at the Starfleet Academy and how they became best buddies. With so many sequels spanning for well over four decades, the original Star Trek simply came to be known as "Classic Star Trek" in order to be easily distinguished from its sequels. All other films and boob tube sequels have been given subtitles attached to the (Star Trek) main title, but with exception to the animated series and the earlier seasons of Star Trek Enterprise.
