What Is The Stargate?

The Stargate is a ring-shaped highly technological device of alien origin which can open portals to other dimensions by creating a wormhole that an individual can step through and be teleported to another place and time entirely different from the one we know of.

But don't be upset because all you need is to bring someone who can read and translate the many hieroglyphic patterns stamped on the faceplate of the rings. Make a good match of those symbols and you just might open the portal to heaven. But then again…

It just may be Hell!

It all began as a work of fiction in a movie created and released in 1994. The sci-fi action film bearing the same title was directed by Roland Emmerich and co-written by Dean Devlin.

The movie in itself bears some semblance to the mainstream science fiction genre in the fact that multidimensional travel and highly advanced technology but the twist here is that despite the typical storyline, there is a distnict absence of the expected alien life forms.

There is but one alien race, disguised as human in the form of Egyptian gods who have enslaved human civilization to serve them.

This alien species, known as Goa'uld, are actually more scientifically and industrially advanced but their anatomy is almost human…

to a degree.

The Goa'uld used their superior technology to give the impression of godly power.

The Stargate movie, despite the lack of inter-galactic warfare and battling aliens, fared well enough at the box office for the producers to extend it into a television series franchise. There was also cartoon series adaptation (Stargate Infinity) as well as a series of video games, novels, comics, and other merchandise.

Of the three television series, Stargate SG-1 proved to be the most popular. The Guinness World Records gave recognized the series as the longest running consecutive sci-fi series (2006), second only to the Doctor Who series which holds the title for longest running sci-fi show overall.

But even when the show was repeatedly expected to end starting from its fifth season, viewer ratings continued to be high. This allowed SG1 to continue into its' tenth and final season, surpassing the equally popular X-Files as the longest running U.S. sci-fi series. SG1 was the formally taken off the air in 2007, but 2 movies have been created that tie up all the loose ends the show left behind.
