The Violator is an arch enemy of Spawn whose main task is to prepare Hellspawn to be the leader of Malebolgia's army. This allows him to walk freely around the earth.

However, it is known that he was one of the soldiers who were loyal to God but refused to take part in the great battle. For this most of the others were banished from heaven and bound to the Tiend. Mammon on the other hand was cast to hell.

Among the five phlebiac demonic brothers, Violator is the oldest. The others are Vacillator, Vindicator, Vaporizer and Vandalizer. All these demons were created by Malebolgia for the sole purpose of training Hellspawn.

When walking among human beings, he takes the form of a short obese clown. This Clown has a blue face paint face at the top which includes an 'M' which is a sign for Malebolgia. This sign also shows every time the clown posses another body.

When al Simmons was sent back to the earth as the latest hellspawn, the Violator was his monitor BUT Instead of carrying out his intended duties he went on a killing spree in a bid to persuade the mafia to destroy Spawn, but instead this resulted in lower crime rates.

Due to the Violators indiscretions Malebolgia locked him into his clown form. While in this form Violator reveals his past, especially his encounters with the earlier Spawn.

The Violator kidnaps Spawns ex-wife leading which leads to a battle in which he is decapitated.

Despite this the Violator's attack was declared successful since he had succeeded in driving away Hellspawn's only love. Also Spawn was blamed for the Violator's attacks on the city's mafia leaders.

On finding out the Clown decided to tell them the truth. For this to work he needed some powers and therefore borrowed some from Spawn.

He began another round of murders but his brothers were now embarrassed with his actions and decided to put an end to them however using the powers gained from Spawn, the Clown defeated them before returning the powers to Spawn.

There was a fierce battle between Spawn and the Violator when the he tried to lure Spawn into a trap using a lackey named Rat.

The battle happens in the sewers where violator first rips out Rat's heart and pulls Spawn into the sewers, however a sewer pipe raptures sending them to different parts of the sewer and ending the battle.

His plans for vengeance do not end easily thwarted though and he uses Jason Wayne to try and get to Spawn's family. Using his Clown form he transforms himself into Spawns form in order to kidnap Wanda's daughter but Spawn catches him while he is still in the Clown form and destroys him.

The Violator has certain demonic powers that make the plot more interesting. He has superior strength and unarmed combat techniques. He has shape shifting capabilities as well as the ability to change his size. He has claws and can breathe fire in some cases.

Also he does not need to eat or breathe air to live but in the Clown form there are some limitations to his capabilities. For instance he doesn't have claws therefore his fighting capabilities are limited. However, he can teleport or posses different human bodies at the same time.
